Urk’s New Logo Sparks Controversy; Petition Calls for Old Design’s Return
The introduction of Urk’s new logo has not gone unnoticed among its inhabitants. The former logo, featuring the island’s outline and a herring, has been replaced by a modern rendering of the municipal coat of arms, encapsulated by a stylish ‘U’. While some residents appreciate the new design, a significant portion has expressed their disapproval, even launching a petition to restore the old logo.
Reactions to the new logo have been mixed, with opinions ranging from positive to downright critical. A woman shopping in the town center praised the logo’s simplicity, stating, "It’s simple, and it doesn’t need to be any more complicated. I think it’s good this way." The municipality aimed for simplicity with the new logo, as their previous design was complex and less versatile.
However, not everyone shares this enthusiasm. A man leaving the local supermarket with some groceries voiced his dissent, "I think it’s meaningless, it doesn’t represent anything, not even Urk." The municipality maintains that the logo is inspired by the historic coat of arms of Urk.
The single, prominent ‘U’ in the logo is another point of contention. Residents argue that it lacks symbolism and resembles other brands’ logos, namely Terneuzen’s. Social media has seen comparisons of the two logos, with many Urk inhabitants questioning the similarities.
In an effort to avoid heated debates, the municipality disabled commenting on their Facebook and Instagram posts announcing the new logo. Instead of manually deleting critical comments, they chose to turn off the comments section altogether.
Despite the public backlash, the municipality claims to have received a substantial amount of positive feedback. They are glad to see Urk residents engaging with the topic and value the discourse.
One particularly disgruntled resident, Maarten Post, started a petition to restore the old coat of arms as the logo. Post believes the new design has strayed too far from its roots, specifically missing the symbolic herring that once adorned the logo. The petition, now nearing 800 signatures, calls for the municipality to reconsider its choice and revert to the traditional design.
Despite the municipality’s assurance that the new logo is inspired by the old coat of arms, Post argues that the herring, a defining feature of the historic emblem, is absent in the new design. Post is of the opinion that the logo should be inspired by, not identical to, the old coat of arms to circumvent any restrictions regarding its usage.
While the new logo continues to spark controversy, some residents remain optimistic. One woman believes it’s an adjustment period, stating, "It’s just something we need to get used to. Once it becomes normal, it’ll look fine." Another resident echoed this sentiment, hoping that next week, they might see the new logo in a different light.
