Ukraine‘s Defense in Kursk: Despite Losses, Russian Gains Limited; British Intelligence Reports Progress in Eastern Ukraine
While Ukraine continues to protect its territory in Kursk against relentless attacks from Russian and North Korean forces, Russia’s gains have been modest despite heavy losses, according to the latest update.
Britain’s defense ministry reports that in eastern Ukraine, Russia has focused its attacks on central Donetsk. Russia has now largely seized the city of Kurakhove, which it began attacking in mid-November 2024. To the south of Pokrovsk, Russian troops have pushed west, capturing several villages and reaching positions around 4km south of the city.
"Central Donetsk remains the most unstable area along the eastern Ukrainian frontline," the ministry noted.
Ukraine’s armed forces launched an operation in the Kursk region on August 6, 2024, initially capturing over 1,000 square kilometers. However, Russia counterattacked with North Korean support to reclaim some territory. On January 5, 2025, Ukraine’s defense forces stepped up operations in Kursk, launching surprise attacks on multiple fronts.
