In the pursuit of a long, healthy life, science tells us that we can influence our lifestyle to live much longer, but reaching the century mark often requires a touch of luck. Arriving at 100 years or more is complex and unlikely without the genes of longevity, yet a long and healthy life is within reach for most. Understanding the balance between lifestyle and genetics is key to maximizing your lifespan.

The Role of Genetics and Lifestyle in Longevity

Scientific consensus attributes about 25% of our lifespan to genetics and 75% to our environment and lifestyle. However, this balance shifts when nearing the 100-year milestone. Dr. Thomas Perls, professor of medicine at Boston University’s Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, explains that many centenarians haven’t necessarily lived healthier lives than the average person. Yet, they are less prone to heart problems and dementia (Springer, 2024).

Lifestyle Habits for a Longer, Healthier Life

Adopting healthy habits can significantly extend our lives. A study published last year analyzed the lifestyles of over 276,000 U.S. veterans and identified eight key habits that can add up to 24 years to our lifespan. These habits include maintaining a healthy diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, strong social connections, and avoiding smoking, opioid abuse, and excessive drinking. Veterans who adopted these habits had an expected lifespan of 87 years, a decade longer than the average American (Science Direct, 2023).

The Role of ‘Longevity Genes’

For all our efforts, reaching 100 years old remains challenging, and many centenarians didn’t adhere to these healthy habits. Their longevity is often due to specific genetic variants working in their favor. For example, the APOE gene influences Alzheimer’s risk, with the APOE2 variant lowering risk and APOE4 increasing it. The FOXO3 gene, frequently found in centenarians, plays a crucial role in cellular health and aging processes. These longevity genes are rare, occurring in just 1% of the population (PubMed, 1996, 2008). Thus, reaching 100 years is often compared to winning a lottery.
