Alec Baldwin Sues Prosecutors Over Dropped ‘Rust‘ Case
Actor Alec Baldwin has filed a civil lawsuit against the New Mexico county prosecutors and detectives overseeing the ‘Rust’ film-set shooting case. The lawsuit, obtained by the Associated Press, argues that the authorities acted in bad faith and violated Baldwin’s constitutional rights by pursuing a criminal case against him.
Baldwin was initially charged with involuntary manslaughter after the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western film in 2021. However, the case was dismissed by a judge in April this year. The lawsuit now contends that the case was initiated with "actual malice" and "intentional misconduct."
The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, as well as a declaration that the defendant’s conduct was unlawful and unconstitutional. Baldwin’s attorney has stated that the lawsuit aims to hold the authorities accountable for their actions.
Among the defendants named in the suit is Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, who had warned Baldwin that he could face criminal charges if he didn’t cooperate with investigators. The lawsuit also names lead detective coalesce hill.
Baldwin had previously suggested that he was being singled out as the most famous person on the set and that the accusation against him was a politically motivated move aimed at helping the prosecutors’ election prospects. The lawsuit states that Baldwin was "indicted not because he was actually guilty of any crime, but because he was famous."
This litigation comes after a long and convoluted legal process involving the ‘Rust’ case.
