Title: Warnings of Mass Dismissals and Crackdowns in Bulgaria’s Social Ministry
Bulgarian democracy took a blow as Hüsni Adem, a deputy from the "Democracy, Rights, and Freedoms – DPS" parliamentary group, sounded the alarm on mass political dismissals and repression within the social ministry system. In a declaration delivered on the parliamentary tribune and reported by BNR, Adem pointed the finger at DPS – Novo Nashelo leader Delyan Peevski as the instigator of these pressures.
"Within the structures of just one ministry in the last 9 months, over 500 employees have been dismissed and over 500 new appointments have been made," Adem revealed from the tribune. "The purges start from the lowest levels and even reach executive directors."
Adem believes these actions have reached a peak during the pre-election campaign but began as soon as Dimitar Glavchev’s caretaker cabinet took office. The issue was to be discussed in a hearing today with Prime Minister Glavchev and three cabinet ministers. However, the hearing was postponed due to the absence of three government members, who cited urgent commitments. The topic at hand was the compulsory registration of heavy-duty vehicles in a virtual queue for the Danube Bridge in Ruse, despite Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen Area.
In a disturbing turn, Adem’s warning adds to a growing list of concerns about political interference in Bulgaria’s public sector. As the country looks to strengthen its democratic institutions and prepare for EU integration, issues of political pluralism and transparency within its ministries are of paramount importance.
