A minor traffic incident in Sofia’s Lozenets neighborhood took a grotesque turn when it escalated into an assault and shooting. The incident occurred on the morning of January 10, 2025, when a car driven by the personal security guard of businessman Minko Staykov collided with another vehicle. Both drivers pulled over to assess the damage and exchange insurance details, but one driver, a 45-year-old man, had an unexpected change of heart and suddenly sped off towards a nearby residential area.
The bewildered guard, accompanied by his employer’s son who was in the passenger seat, decided to follow the erratic driver to ensure that he did not flee the scene. Little did they know that they were trailing the driver straight into a trap.
As they approached the driver’s house, the man’s father, a 70-year-old resident, emerged from the property wielding a gardening tool. In a fit of rage, he launched a physical assault on the young security guard, who was left with no choice but to defend himself and his companion, as prescribed by Bulgarian law.
The guard, who was licensed to carry a firearm for his security duties, drew his legally owned pistol and fired warning shots into the air to disperse the combative duo. The father and son pair were subsequently apprehended by local police and taken into custody.
This unusual chain of events has left the residents of Lozenets rattled, their peaceful neighborhood forever marred by this violent spectacle. The Bulgarian police have issued a statement clarifying that the incident was a clear-cut case of self-defense, and the security guard’s actions were deemed justified. The investigation into the motive behind the pair’s aggressive behavior continues.
