On Christmas Day, Shahzad Raja, owner and chef of Caravan Kebab, continued a tradition of giving back to the community by distributing over 125 meals of roast chicken and rice pilaf to those in need. Raja, along with volunteers from Volunteers of American Western Washington (VOAWW) and individual community members, delivered meals across the Seattle area.
A Decade of Christmas Giving
Raja began this annual tradition in 2010, choosing to mark his birthday by providing a warm meal to others. “That’s how I celebrate it,” he said. What began with Raja personally distributing 20 to 30 meals has grown significantly over the years, reaching over 300 meals last year. This year’s distribution was scaled back to over 125 meals due to recent challenges faced by the restaurant.
Volunteers Amira Atan and Christina Ross coordinated deliveries from Edmonds to Everett, while Raja himself focused on Shoreline and the University District. The effort was supported by Steve Woodard, Vice President of Community Engagement at VOAWW.
Overcoming Challenges
Caravan Kebab faced a significant setback earlier this year when a van crashed into the restaurant in March, forcing a six-month closure for repairs. Despite this hardship, Raja expressed gratitude for the support of his regular customers and remains optimistic about the future. “The regular customer came to support me, and they are happy we are working,” Raja said. “It’s a little tough right now…I have strong hopes we’re gonna make it.”
Caravan Kebab, which has served the Edmonds area since 2010, offers a diverse menu inspired by Raja’s travels through Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, Central Asia, and his Pakistani heritage, featuring cuisines from India, Ukraine, Turkey, and Greece.
