Two prisoners are currently being sought by police after escaping from HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire on New Year’s Day. Avon and Somerset Police initiated a search for Matthew Armstrong and Daniel Washbourne after they absconded between 5pm and 8pm on January 1st.
Search Underway for Violent Offenders
Both men have a history of violent offenses. Matthew Armstrong, 35, was convicted of murder in the late 2000s following a robbery in Warwickshire. Daniel Washbourne, 40, has prior convictions for violence and false imprisonment.
Police have advised the public not to approach either man if spotted, and instead to immediately contact 999. A third prisoner, suspected of absconding at the same time, has already been apprehended in Bristol.
Identifying the Absconders
Armstrong is described as white, approximately 5ft 9ins tall, with ginger hair and scars on his forehead. He was last seen wearing a burgundy/orange coat, a grey cap, grey tracksuit bottoms with blue stripes, and black boots.
Washbourne is described as white, approximately 5ft 6ins tall, slim build, with brown hair and clean shaven. He was last seen wearing a cream fleece, blue tracksuit bottoms, a blue hat, and black trainers.
Avon and Somerset Police were alerted to the escape the evening it occurred and have released CCTV footage of the men’s clothing from the day they fled, appealing to the public for assistance.
