A tech industry leader has been arrested in connection with the death of his estranged wife, whose body was discovered late last year in Southern California.
Gordon Abas Goodarzi, 66, was arrested Friday at his home in Rolling Hills following an investigation into the death of Aryan Papoli, 58, of Newport Beach. Papoli’s body was found on November 18th near Crestline, 75 feet down an embankment, but remained unidentified for almost two weeks.
The San Bernardino County coroner determined Papoli’s cause of death to be a homicide, though officials noted her injuries appeared consistent with a fall.
Goodarzi is currently being held at the Central Detention Center without bail.
Papoli, who immigrated to the US from Iran at age 18, co-founded US Hybrid with Goodarzi approximately 30 years ago. The company specializes in zero-emission powertrain components for commercial vehicles.
Goodarzi is also affiliated with UCLA as a research affiliate, with the university highlighting his extensive experience in electric vehicle technology.
The couple shared two sons, Navid and Milad, and owned a five-bedroom home in Rolling Hills, purchased in 2017.
According to a statement given to the Los Angeles Times, Papoli’s son, Navid Goodarzi, described his mother as someone who embraced both her Iranian heritage and her American life, emphasizing the importance of family traditions like Sunday meals.
Papoli moved to Newport Beach six months before her death, seeking a peaceful environment to pursue creative endeavors after leaving her corporate role, her son stated.
