LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech has promoted safeties coach Rob Greene to co-defensive coordinator, head coach Joey McGuire announced Tuesday. Greene will continue to coach the Red Raider safeties while taking on a larger role within the defensive staff, working alongside defensive coordinator Shiel Wood.
A Rapid Rise for Coach Greene
McGuire stated that Greene “has been a tremendous addition” to the defensive staff and “is worthy of an elevated role.” The move comes after Greene’s first season with Texas Tech, where he worked to improve a defense that saw significant gains in performance.
Prior to joining Texas Tech, Greene coached at Tulane for two seasons (2023 and 2024) and Wofford in 2017. His appointment at Texas Tech reunited him with Wood, as the two previously coached together at both Tulane and Wofford.
Championship Experience
Greene has been part of teams that reached conference championship games for the past three seasons. Tulane competed for the American Athletic Conference crown twice during his tenure, and Texas Tech won the Big 12 title this past season, earning a spot in the College Football Playoff. Over the last three seasons, Greene’s teams have accumulated 32 wins, with a 23-2 record in regular-season conference games.
The Red Raiders’ defense saw marked improvement in 2024, ranking third nationally in both scoring defense (11.8 points per game) and total defense (258.3 yards allowed). They led the FBS in rushing defense (68.1 yards allowed per game) and takeaways (32 turnovers). The secondary, in particular, benefited from Greene’s and cornerbacks coach Darcel McBath’s arrival, recording 17 interceptions – the most since 2008.
Greene was also recognized for his potential as a leader in the coaching profession, being selected for the AFCA 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute earlier this month.
Looking ahead, Greene will return two starters at the “star” position: rising senior Brenden Jordan and junior John Curry. The team will be without Cole Wisniewski, an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection, who will participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl.
