A 45-year-old trailer driver was sentenced to 24 weeks’ jail on Thursday, February 5, for causing the death of a 64-year-old cyclist in Tampines, Singapore. Mazli Wahab, a Malaysian national, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention, resulting in the death of Madam Lim Kim Huay.
THE CASE
Mazli was driving a prime mover with a 12.2-meter-long trailer attached. On January 3, 2025, at approximately 5:30 am, he entered Singapore from Johor Bahru to deliver precast concrete to Tampines Street 11.
At the same time, Madam Lim was cycling across a pedestrian crossing at Tampines Street 11. An eyewitness testified that she began crossing after the traffic lights turned green in her favour.
When Mazli reached the junction, the lights were also green for him, but Madam Lim had the right of way. He failed to preserve a proper lookout while making a left turn onto Tampines Street 11 and did not see Madam Lim cycling across the road.
The trailer struck Madam Lim, causing her to fall and be run over. Eyewitnesses alerted Mazli by shouting and knocking on his door and he stopped and partially reversed the trailer at their request, as Madam Lim was trapped underneath.
Paramedics arrived, but Madam Lim lost consciousness and could not be revived. She had attempted to cycle away from the trailer, but was unsuccessful.
The prosecutor had requested a jail sentence of five to seven months, in addition to the mandatory eight-year disqualification from driving. The prosecutor noted that while there was no evidence of speeding, Mazli should have exercised greater caution given the size and potential for harm associated with his vehicle.
The prosecutor stated that Mazli’s failure to see Madam Lim, who was directly in front of him, demonstrated carelessness and that the accident was avoidable with proper attention.
