Heartbreak and Hope: A Texas Cycling Team Faces Unimaginable Challenges
The Heart of Texas Junior Cycling team is grappling with a devastating double blow, highlighting both the fragility and resilience of young athletes. In a single day, the team experienced the trauma of a hit-and-run crash leaving one rider critically injured and the heartbreaking leukemia diagnosis of another.
A Friday That Changed Everything
February 6th began like any other training day for the team. Sixteen-year-old Walker Carroll was riding with a teammate on FM 2957 near Hallsburg when a Chevrolet Silverado struck him and fled the scene. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the driver was later located and is too receiving hospital treatment. Simultaneously, just hours later, thirteen-year-old Colton Young received a leukemia diagnosis after experiencing unexplained fatigue.
Walker Carroll’s Fight for Recovery
Walker Carroll sustained severe injuries, including a traumatic brain injury requiring emergency surgery, a burst spinal fracture, a broken fibula and tailbone, and internal organ damage. His father, Dan Carroll, shared that Walker remains unconscious, and his recovery will be a year-long process. The family is leaning on their faith and the outpouring of support from the community.
Colton Young’s Courageous Battle
Colton Young, an eighth grader at Lorena Middle School, began chemotherapy immediately after his diagnosis. His mother, Tamara Moore, noted that Colton had been unusually tired, even even as continuing to cycle at Cameron Park. Doctors anticipate a long-term treatment plan for Colton.
Community Rallies Around the Team
The Heart of Texas Junior Cycling team and the wider Central Texas community have responded with incredible support. More than 50 people gathered at the hospital to pray for Walker the night of the crash. Strangers have offered meals and financial assistance to both families. The team has established online support pages and is planning a benefit event to help with medical expenses.
The Power of Sport in Times of Adversity
Head coach Brady Gibson emphasized the team’s commitment to dedicating their season to both Walker and Colton. He described the situation as an “endurance battle” but expressed confidence in their ability to overcome these challenges, fueled by the strength of their community.
