TUCSON, Ariz. — A clutch assist from JT Toppin to Donovan Atwell sealed a 78-75 overtime victory for No. 16 Texas Tech over No. 1 Arizona on Saturday. The win marks only the third time in program history that Texas Tech has defeated a top-ranked team.
A Game of Teamwork and Stamina
Toppin, who scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, found Atwell open for a crucial 3-pointer in overtime after Arizona’s defense focused on stopping him. “I knew he was going to be over there,” Toppin said. “We work on that every day.”
The forward’s performance included 13-of-22 shooting from the field, three assists, two steals and one block. He has scored at least 10 points in 21 consecutive games. Toppin played all but 41 seconds of the game.
Christian Anderson contributed 19 points for the Red Raiders, making six 3-pointers. Atwell finished with 11 points, including a key 3-pointer with 25 seconds remaining in regulation that tied the game and forced overtime.
Texas Tech (19-6, 9-3 Big 12) has now won three games in a row. Coach Grant McCasland emphasized the team’s dedication, and preparation. “We’re not guessing — this isn’t luck,” McCasland said. “These dudes practice hard and put themselves in position every day.”
Arizona’s Perspective
Arizona forward Tobe Awaka, who scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds, praised Toppin’s performance. “He has a really quick second jump,” Awaka said. “He has great body placement…He seems to always be in the right place at the right time.”
