Compared to all the other girls, she was extremely decent at jumping,” he recalls. She was quickly identified as an “ultra-talent.”
A Rapid Rise Through the Ranks
Näslund’s ascent was swift. She debuted in the World Cup at just 15 years old and earned a spot at the 2014 Sochi Olympics at 17, finishing fifth. Her ability to intuitively understand and manage the course – the rolls, turns, and jumps – set her apart. Forbundskapten Erik Iljans remembers her composure during a particularly challenging jump in Sochi, noting she was the only competitor he felt confident would navigate it safely.
Beyond technical skill, Näslund possesses an unwavering competitive spirit and relentless determination. Her father describes her as inheriting a similar tenacity from her grandfather: “If he had a lawnmower that didn’t work, he stayed out there until he fixed it. She’s the same; she never gives up. If there’s something she can’t do, she doesn’t depart until she’s solved it and can do it.”
Overcoming Setbacks and Building Momentum
The road hasn’t been without obstacles. Näslund faced a setback in 2018, finishing fourth at the Pyeongchang Olympics. Yet, she rebounded spectacularly, winning gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The past two seasons were disrupted by injuries, but she has returned to form, currently leading the World Cup standings with a dominant performance.
Despite the pressure, Näslund remains calm and focused. “I had more pressure on my shoulders four years ago. Now that I have a gold medal, I will go for another one. But I feel significantly less pressure now,” she says.
The Livigno Challenge
The skicross course in Livigno presents a unique challenge. It’s longer and more technical than typical World Cup tracks, with less emphasis on large jumps. This favors Näslund’s strengths, particularly her ability to excel in the start section. However, she acknowledges the need for precision to avoid costly mistakes.
“It’s not just about going out and getting the medal; the work needs to be done too,” she emphasizes. Her main competitors include Marielle Thompson of Canada, Fanny Smith of France, and Daniela Maier of Germany.
The Mobärg Siblings: A Family Affair
Näslund isn’t the only Swedish athlete to watch. She is joined by the Mobärg siblings – Linnea, Erik, and David – all competing in skicross. Linnea, a rising star, is making her Olympic debut, while Erik and David bring experience to the team. The siblings trained together in Björnrike, Jämtland, before heading to Italy.
