Vocalist Steve Perry has definitively dismissed speculation regarding a potential reunion with Journey ahead of the band’s “Final Frontier” farewell tour, scheduled to initiate February 28. Perry joined Journey in 1977 and was instrumental in their rise to prominence, but departed in 1998 and has not performed with the band since.
Perry addressed the rumors directly through a statement on Instagram, saying, “Although I’m always grateful for the love people still have for Journey, the rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I want to gently put them to rest.” He added that he is focused on fresh creative work and music that reflects his current artistic direction.
The 77-year-old rock legend expressed gratitude for the continued support of fans, stating, “Your loyalty has never gone unnoticed, and I am forever humbly grateful.” Perry and guitarist Neal Schon, the sole remaining original member of Journey, have maintained a somewhat distant relationship.
Journey’s current lineup includes Arnel Pineda, who has been the band’s vocalist since 2007, alongside Neal Schon, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo, and bassist Todd Jensen.
Prior to his recent work, Perry was largely absent from music for much of the 2000s, with the exception of three impromptu performances with the band Eels in 2014. He released the solo album Traces in 2018, followed by two holiday albums. He likewise collaborated with Dolly Parton on a rendition of Journey’s “Open Arms” for Parton’s 2023 album Rockstar, and with Willie Nelson on a version of “Faithfully” for a 2025 Farm Aid benefit.
Vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, who previously served as Journey’s lead singer, commented on Perry’s Instagram post, stating, “We all know where you stand, Steve…Carry on master.”
