FRIEDEWALD – A single-vehicle accident on Autobahn A4, heading west, occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at approximately 7:45 AM. According to initial reports from police in Fulda, the vehicle overturned, and multiple people within the fully occupied car were trapped and injured. The occupants are believed to be two adults and three children. The Christoph 28 rescue helicopter was deployed. At least one person, possibly one of the children, sustained serious injuries and was transported to the nearest hospital by helicopter.
The A4 was fully closed for rescue operations. A reporter from our team was on scene. The individuals involved were a French family returning home to France.
Police released further details, stating that a 35-year-old French driver was traveling in the right lane when, for reasons currently unknown, the vehicle veered off the road, crossed the beginning of a guardrail, and overturned, landing on its roof.
The five family members were able to exit the severely damaged vehicle independently. The 64-year-old grandfather, the mother, and her 6 and 15-year-old sons sustained minor injuries. The 3-year-old son suffered serious injuries and was flown by rescue helicopter to Klinikum Fulda. Those with minor injuries were transported to nearby hospitals via ambulance.
Due to rescue and recovery efforts, the westbound lanes of the A4 were fully closed for approximately two hours. The eastbound lanes were closed for about half an hour to allow for the rescue helicopter’s operation.
Initial estimates place the total property damage at approximately 10,000 Euro. Two police units from the Bad Hersfeld Autobahn station, the Bad Hersfeld volunteer fire department, five ambulances, two emergency medical vehicles, and the rescue helicopter were all present at the scene. (pm/ci)
