Virginia “Ginny” Lund of Wyckoff, New Jersey, passed away on February 18, 2026, at the age of 103. Born Virginia Ruth Wallgren on June 20, 1922, in Chicago, Illinois, to Paul T. Wallgren and Ruth Kron, she lived a life spanning over a century of change and connection.
A Life of Family and Community
Ginny attended North Park College in Chicago after high school. Her first marriage, to Paul M. Lund, a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Navy, took place on August 12, 1944. Together, they raised five children until Paul Lund’s death from cancer in 1975. Following his passing, Ginny married James Callaway, a family friend and widower, in 1976. James Callaway died in 1983.
For 30 years, Ginny volunteered at the Valley Hospital gift shop in New Jersey. She was also a member of the Upper Ridgewood Community Church until its closure. Ginny enjoyed social activities, including golf and bridge, at the Ridgewood Country Club.
Supporting Loved Ones Through Loss
Ginny demonstrated a commitment to family support during difficult times. She assisted her daughter, Christine, following the death of her granddaughter, Kaja Mauldin, from cancer in 2001. Christine was married to Bill Mauldin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist recognized for his work depicting soldiers Willie and Joe during World War II and again in 1959.
Ginny is survived by her sister, Gwen Lewis, her children Christine (Neil Trager), Steven (Jennifer), Jeffrey, Randall and David, stepchildren Nancy Fyffe, Tracy Russo and Jim Callaway, grandsons Samuel Mauldin (Mara Birkerts) and Paul Lund (Sara), and great granddaughters Sara Virginia Lund and Stephanie Lund, as well as numerous other relatives.
On her 103rd birthday, when wished “many more” years, Ginny reportedly responded, “No!” Her family remembers her for her warm hugs, wry wit, and sense of humor.
