Eastern Charlotte County Gets a Healthcare Boost: $1.5 Million Invested in Fundy Health Centre
Residents of Eastern Charlotte County, New Brunswick, are set to experience improved access to primary healthcare thanks to a significant $1.5 million investment in the Fundy Health Centre. The funding, announced on February 24, 2026, will support both infrastructure upgrades and the addition of crucial staffing positions.
Expanding Capacity to Meet Growing Needs
The investment aims to ensure that every resident in Eastern Charlotte currently without a primary care provider will have access to one. This will be achieved through renovations designed to increase clinical space and improve patient flow within the Fundy Health Centre. The project is expected to grab 18 to 24 months to complete.
A Collaborative Care Approach
Fundy Health Centre already provides a range of primary care services, including outpatient care, transitional care (managing chronic diseases and women’s health services) and consultation services. It likewise partners with the Extra-Mural Program for additional support. The centre currently serves 4,159 patients and has been a vital part of the community for approximately 25 years.
The new funding will support the addition of one Nurse Practitioner and three administrative support staff. These new team members will work alongside the existing team, which includes a physician, three nurse practitioners, seven registered nurses and licensed practical nurses, a social worker, a pharmacist, a dietitian, and four administrative staff. The expanded space will also allow for the addition of more allied health professionals in the future.
Part of a Larger Provincial Strategy
This investment is part of a broader provincial strategy to improve access to primary care across New Brunswick. Horizon Health Network is working to establish new family health teams and enhance collaborative care centres like the Fundy Health Centre. The goal is to connect all residents served by Horizon to a primary care provider by 2029. Since April 2025, nearly 10,000 patients have already been connected to a team.
What are Family Health Teams?
Horizon’s primary care transformation strategy focuses on creating Family Health Teams. These teams bring together physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, allied health professionals, and medical office assistants to provide better access to care and a more positive patient experience.
Currently, seven Family Health Teams are in various stages of implementation in Fredericton North, Tantramar, Carleton North, Nordin (Miramichi), Mapleton (Moncton), St. Stephen, and the North End of Saint John. Existing community health centres are also being upgraded to support this team-based approach.
Addressing the Waitlist
Currently, 1,138 residents in Eastern Charlotte are on the provincial waitlist for a primary care provider. The Fundy Health Centre plans to begin accepting these patients as renovations are completed. The centre also offers an appointment-based clinic for those without a family doctor, and recently expanded its services to offer more appointments, increased availability, and shorter wait times.
