UC Irvine defeated Oregon 8-6 on Saturday at the Live Like Lou Las Vegas College Baseball Classic, held at Las Vegas Ballpark. The Anteaters rallied with four runs in the eighth inning to secure the win.
A Back-and-Forth Contest
Oregon took a 5-3 lead in the top of the eighth inning after Dominic Hellman hit a two-run home run and Drew Smith added an RBI single. Though, UC Irvine responded with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, fueled by three hits, a hit batter and three walks – including three hit-by-pitch events.
The Ducks attempted a comeback in the ninth, scoring a run and bringing the tying run to the plate, but Hellman popped out to first base to end the game.
The Anteaters opened the scoring in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. Oregon quickly answered in the second, with Angel Laya driving in Gabe Miranda on a ground out. UC Irvine regained the lead in the third, but Oregon starter Collin Clarke limited the damage, leaving the bases loaded.
