Ithaca College Wrestling Team Soars to Nationals, Continuing Decades-Long Tradition of Excellence
The Ithaca College men’s wrestling team delivered a dominant performance at the NCAA Regionals on February 27 and 28, securing five bids to the Division III NCAA National Championship. The Bombers finished as the regional runner-up, narrowly trailing Stevens Institute of Technology by just 3.5 points.
McDonnell and Parker Lead the Charge
Sophomore Jay McDonnell (133 pounds) and senior Konrad Parker (174 pounds) spearheaded the team’s success, each claiming individual championships. McDonnell’s victories came down to the wire, with wins in both his semi-final and final matches decided in sudden victory overtime. Parker, ranked eighth nationally, showcased his dominance with a quick pin in the round of 16 and a technical fall in the quarterfinals.
“I’m just trusting in my coaches,” McDonnell said. “I know they have put a lot of guys through to nationals and [won] there, so I’m just trusting what they say and working hard.”
A Team Effort to the National Stage
Seniors Isaias Torres (141 pounds) and Ryan Galka (197 pounds) finished as runner-ups, whereas first-year student Kamdyn Dorchester secured third place at 285 pounds. All three earned their spots at the National Championship. Sophomore Akio Sanders placed seventh at 157 pounds, and fellow sophomore Chris Reddy placed eighth at 165 pounds, similarly reaching the podium.
Head coach Marty Nichols highlighted the significance of Dorchester’s qualification. “We got a first-year going [to the national championship], so that’s awesome,” Nichols said. “We’re excited, it’s going to be fun.”
Coaching Excellence Recognized
The team’s success wasn’t limited to the wrestlers. Nichols was named the regional coach of the year, and assistant coach Eze Chukwuezi ’23 was selected as the regional staff member of the year. Nichols emphasized the team’s preparation for high-pressure situations, utilizing intense practice drills to simulate challenging match scenarios.
