Rare Fossil Reveals New Insights into Baby Dome-Headed Dinosaurs
For decades, paleontologists have primarily studied pachycephalosaurus – the dome-headed dinosaur – based on fossilized skulls. Remains of the body, particularly from young individuals, have been scarce. A Young Pachycephalosaur Discovery
Researchers have described the youngest pachycephalosaurus body fossil ever found. This find provides crucial information about the development (ontogeny) and movement patterns of these dinosaurs when they were very young. The fossil, designated CMNFV 22039, is estimated to be approximately 67 million years old, dating back to the Maastrichtian stage of the late Cretaceous period.
The specimen was unearthed in the Frenchman Formation, a relatively young geological formation in southern Saskatchewan, Canada. What makes this discovery particularly significant is that the dinosaur is believed to have been less than one year old at the time of its death, making it the youngest pachycephalosaurus known from skeletal remains, rather than just a skull.
Understanding Pachycephalosauria
According to paleontologist Bryan Moore of Carleton University and his colleagues, the Pachycephalosauria group consisted of relatively small dinosaurs. “Pachycephalosauria largely comprised small (2–6 meters in length) bipedal dinosaurs that lived from the Santonian to Maastrichtian ages (85 to 66 million years ago) in Asia and North America,” explained Moore and his team.
This group is most recognizable by its distinctive skull structure. “This clade is best known for the fusion of the frontal and parietal bones into a bulbous dome,” the researchers wrote. The surrounding skull often participated in the fusion and was frequently adorned with bumps, spikes, and other ornamentation. This thick, rigid dome made the head the most resistant part of the skeleton to decay and weathering.
“Because the frontoparietal dome is the most taphonomically resistant portion of the pachycephalosaur skeleton (aside from teeth), the fossil record of pachycephalosauria is dominated by partial cranial remains,” the scientists noted. Much of the scientific knowledge about the evolution and growth of these dinosaurs has historically relied on skull morphology.
Early Development of Key Traits
Despite its young age and small size – estimated at around 3 feet long – the fossil already exhibits several diagnostic characteristics of Pachycephalosauria. “Despite its small size (estimated total length of 90 cm or approximately 3 feet), the skeleton exhibits several diagnostic characters of Pachycephalosauria,” the paleontologists stated. This suggests that many of the features scientists have used to identify adult pachycephalosaurs were already present very early in their lives.
The discovery challenges previous assumptions and opens new avenues for research into the growth and behavior of these fascinating dinosaurs.
