Novel Multi-Purpose Sports Facility Opens in Yongyu, Incheon – A Sign of Growing Community Investment
Ahead of Yonggu District’s launch in just four months, a new multi-purpose sports facility has been completed in the Yongyu area of Jung-gu, Incheon, providing residents with a much-needed space for healthy leisure activities.
The opening ceremony for the ‘Yongyu Multi-Purpose Sports Facility’ was held on March 5th, with over 100 attendees including Jung-gu Mayor Kim Jeong-heon, Member of the National Assembly Bae Jun-young, council members, local community leaders, and residents.
Addressing a Demand for Accessible Recreation
The facility addresses a significant gap in recreational opportunities within the Yongyu area. Previously, residents faced limited access to dedicated sports and leisure spaces. This new facility aims to revitalize local sports participation and promote public health.

The facility, located at 186-21 Eulwang-dong, spans 464㎡ and consists of a one-story main building and an ancillary building. It includes a multi-purpose sports area suitable for badminton, gateball, and other activities, as well as essential amenities like restrooms and a lounge.
Funding and Construction
The project required a total investment of 920 million won, comprising 160 million won from the city, 460 million won from the district, and 300 million won in special grants. Construction began in September 2025 and was completed in February 2026.
More Than Just a Sports Complex: A Community Hub
The facility is envisioned as more than just a place to play sports. It’s designed to be an open and accessible space for all residents, capable of hosting local sports events and community gatherings. It will support healthy aging by providing a safe and convenient environment for seniors to stay active.

Jung-gu officials plan to prioritize facility maintenance and management to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all users.

“The Yongyu Multi-Purpose Sports Facility is a sports space created to reflect the long-cherished wish of local residents,” said Jung-gu Mayor Kim Jeong-heon. “With the launch of Yonggu District approaching, we will do our best to expand sports infrastructure within living areas to improve public health and quality of life.”
The Broader Trend: Investing in Local Wellbeing
This new facility is part of a larger trend of local governments prioritizing investment in community wellbeing. Similar projects are emerging across South Korea, driven by a growing awareness of the importance of accessible recreation for both physical and mental health. The upcoming establishment of Yonggu District is expected to further accelerate these initiatives.
