WILMINGTON, N.C. – North Carolina Central’s track and field teams began their outdoor season with seven victories at the Seahawk Invitational, hosted by UNC Wilmington on March 6-7 at the Greene Track & Field Complex.
Strong Start for Eagles
The meet kicked off on Friday with a win for freshman Juan Tinajero Jr. In the men’s 5,000m, finishing with a time of 16:28.73. Tinajero Jr. Also competed in the 1,500m, recording a season-best time of 4:19.10.
Saturday brought further success for the Eagles. Orlando McClean won the men’s 100m in 10.63 seconds, setting a new personal record. Kayla Johnson followed with a victory in the women’s 800m, finishing in 2:16.89.
Melanne Sutton also secured a win for NCCU, taking first place in the women’s 200m with a time of 24.35 seconds. Sutton was also part of the winning 4x400m relay team, alongside T’Sheylah Moore, Gianna Marquez and Nyree Bacchus, who finished with a time of 3:59.43. A second NCCU team placed third in the same event.
In field events, Tia Lucas and Rachel Key-White each claimed a victory. Key-White won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 11.19m, while Lucas captured the women’s high jump title by clearing 1.70m. Key-White also finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.65m.
NC Central will now prepare for the Raleigh Relays, hosted by NC State, from March 26-28.
