A baffling mystery continues in Mid Wales, 16 months after a dog walker discovered a man’s body in a reservoir on October 17, 2024. Despite extensive investigation, the man’s identity remains unknown.

A Lingering Question

Detectives are hoping a newly released image, created using advanced forensic techniques, will finally unlock the case. The man was found wearing a Zone 3 Agile wetsuit, size XL, but had no belongings or identification with him. “No belongings, nothing found around the banking, no vehicle left nearby,” stated Detective Inspector Anthea Ponting.

Did You Know? The man’s body was discovered at the remote Claerwen reservoir, which is four-and-a-half miles long.

Initial searches, involving helicopters, drones, and a boat team, yielded no clues. Dyfed-Powys Police have pursued numerous leads, including checking missing persons databases, medical records, and contacting Interpol.

Forensic Reconstruction

To aid in identification, police collaborated with Face Lab at Liverpool John Moores University. Using CT scans of the man’s skull, forensic experts reconstructed his face. Professor Caroline Wilkinson noted the man had an “unusual dental pattern” – an open bite – that could be recognizable.

Expert Insight: The lack of any identifying features or belongings suggests this case presents significant challenges. The reliance on forensic reconstruction highlights the lengths investigators are going to in the absence of traditional leads, and underscores the possibility that the man may have been intentionally without identification.

Police estimate the man had been in the water for up to 12 weeks before his body was found, potentially placing his entry into the reservoir around mid-summer 2024. Although one theory suggests he may have been swimming with belongings in a dry bag, there is currently no evidence to support this.

Ongoing Investigation

An inconclusive post-mortem examination has not yet determined the man’s cause of death. DI Ponting emphasized the importance of identifying the man, stating, “we just want to resolve it…that he can then he can be afforded the dignity of them deciding how he is permanently laid to rest.”
