New Delhi Gears Up for Second World Para Athletics Grand Prix
New Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is once again at the center of the Para athletics world, hosting the second Grand Prix of the season. Following a successful debut in March, the venue will remain a key part of the Grand Prix program for the next two years.
A Venue Steeped in Championship History
The JLN Stadium holds significant weight in the Para athletics community, having hosted the country’s first-ever World Para Athletics Championships last October. Over 1,100 athletes from 100 nations competed at the championships, showcasing the stadium’s capacity and facilities. The newly installed MONDO track was a key feature of the event.
Indian Athletes Lead the Charge
India is aiming to build on its strong performance at the season-opening Grand Prix in Dubai. A strong contingent of 219 Indian athletes (165 male and 54 female) will compete, led by Paralympic champions and medalists.
Spotlight on Key Indian Athletes
Two-time Paralympic champion Sumit Antil, fresh off a gold medal in Dubai, will compete in the men’s javelin F64. Paris 2024 gold medalist Praveen Kumar will participate in the men’s 100m, long jump, and high jump T44 events. Preeti Pal, a two-time Paris 2024 medalist, will as well be a key athlete to watch, following her success in Dubai. Mariyappan Thangavelu and Ajeet Singh add further strength to the host nation’s team.
International Competition Returns
While the international field in New Delhi is smaller than in Dubai, notable athletes are returning to compete on the same track where they achieved world championship success. Two-time world champion David Dzhatiev will compete in the men’s 100m and 200m T35 events, and two-time Paralympic gold medallist Elena Pautova will compete in the women’s 1500m T13 event.
Athletes from Nepal, including Himal Aryal, are also returning to New Delhi to gain valuable Grand Prix experience.
