Cheltenham Festival punters are looking ahead to a compelling card on day two, with the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase (2:00pm) shaping up to be a highly competitive race.
Sixteen runners are set to compete in this renewal. Romeo Coolio is currently favored at 5/2, having bypassed a previously anticipated run in the Arkle in favor of testing his stamina over this extended three-mile distance. Although the horse has already secured three Grade One wins this season, concerns have been raised regarding his suitability for the longer distance, as trainer Gordon Elliott has repeatedly indicated Romeo Coolio is best suited to a two-and-a-half-mile race.
A strong contender at a more favorable price is Wendigo, currently available at 8/1 with Star Sports. The horse delivered a strong performance at last year’s Festival and has continued to improve in his chasing career, securing a Grade Two win at Newbury. While softer ground would be ideal, Wendigo is expected to finish strongly.
Koktail Divin is also attracting attention. Trained by Henry de Bromhead, who also has The Big Westerner entered, Koktail Divin previously finished fourth to Stayers’ Hurdle hopeful Honesty Policy at Aintree as a novice hurdler. The trainer’s horses are known to improve with fences and Koktail Divin has demonstrated this, finishing second to Romeo Coolio on his chasing debut and subsequently winning at Leopardstown over two-mile-five-furlongs.
The Cross Country Chase (3:20pm) presents another interesting challenge, particularly with the weight distribution. Stumptown’s high mark may disadvantage some lower-rated competitors, while Vanillier appears to have been given a favorable chance by the handicapper. Vanillier performed well at last year’s Festival, despite a navigational error, and benefits from a seven-pound swing with Stumptown from their previous encounter, making the 8/1 each-way bet appealing.
