Die DFB-Pokal-Rekordsiegerinnen vom VfL Wolfsburg sind am Mittwochabend erneut ins Halbfinale eingezogen. Beim 1:0 (1:0) gegen Eintracht Frankfurt gelang Svenja Huth das entscheidende Tor.
For ten consecutive years (2014 to 2024), Wolfsburg had won the German Cup – until that incredible run of success was broken last year with a 0-1 defeat at TSG Hoffenheim. Bayern Munich ultimately secured the title.
Now, however, Wolfsburg has mastered the round of the last eight. In the semi-final in early April, they will now travel to FC Carl Zeiss Jena. The grand final will be held in Cologne on May 14th. A duel with FC Bayern Munich is possible then, as they are now receiving SGS Essen after the 3-0 success against HSV in the semi-final.
Huth Secures the Lead
The duel between the Bundesliga’s second-placed team (Wolfsburg) and the third-placed team (Frankfurt) was entertaining from the start. Both teams immediately went on the offensive. Initially, with the better chances for Eintracht. Laura Freigang (4th minute) and Nina Lührßen (23rd minute) failed from promising positions.
Wolfsburg was more efficient. After chaos in the Frankfurt penalty area, the ball suddenly landed at Huth’s feet. And the Wolfsburg captain’s finish, who recently extended her contract for another year, was then deflected and became unstoppable – 1:0 (35th minute)!
Popp Misses the 2:0
In the second half, Frankfurt pushed for the equalizer. Fortunately for Wolfsburg, Camilla Küver was able to block Elisa Senß’s shot just before the goal line with a tackle, after goalkeeper Stina Johannes had lost her bearings (61st minute). Shortly afterwards, Johannes was back in position against Rebecka Blomqvist (80th minute).
On the other side, Wolfsburg had another great chance to extend their lead. Huth’s cross from the right wing was a little too steep for Alexandra Popp (82nd minute). Justine Kielland also missed a great opportunity (90+3 minute). So it remained a narrow 1-0 victory.
And so the “She-Wolves” are now just two wins away from their eleventh cup triumph in the last twelve years…
