Xbox Series X|S sales have declined in recent years, leading to questions about the future of Microsoft’s hardware business.

Concerns have grown among fans that Microsoft might abandon the console market, particularly given the availability of many Xbox exclusives on competing platforms and PC.

Former Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated in 2024 that Microsoft would continue to invest in hardware, but this did little to reassure the community. Now, another executive has reaffirmed the company’s commitment.

The Console “Will Always Be Present” in the Future of Xbox

This week’s GDC 2026 featured details about Project Helix, Microsoft’s next-generation console.

Jason Ronald, VP of hardware at Xbox, emphasized the importance of consoles to the company’s overall strategy. He stated that consoles are the “heart” of the brand and “will always be present.”

“When we think about the future of Xbox and the next generation, we consider it from two main perspectives. First, the console is fundamental to Xbox; it is the heart of what we are, it will always be present and is of vital importance to our future. That’s why we are investing so much in Project Helix to drive the next generation of console gaming.”

Ronald too highlighted the appeal of portable devices, noting the market has seen “tremendous growth.” Microsoft partnered with ASUS to launch the ROG Xbox Ally in 2025.

The VP of hardware also expressed enthusiasm for the possibilities offered by accessories like controllers, which he described as the connection between the platform and the player.

“In a world where players play on multiple devices, it is essential that the controller adapts to the different screens. The controller is also the physical connection between the player and the games you create, so how can we achieve greater immersion and fidelity in the experience, by allowing players to choose to play on any screen?”

Project Helix: Microsoft’s Massive Bet

These statements should reassure fans following recent pessimistic reports. Analyst Dr. Serkan Toto of Kantan Games suggested Project Helix “could be Microsoft’s last attempt to boost its hardware business.”

Toto noted that if the platform fails, Microsoft may abandon the console market.

During GDC 2026, Microsoft revealed Project Helix will feature a custom AMD SoC co-designed for the next generation of DirectX and FSR. Alpha version development kits will ship to studios starting in 2027.
