Hamburg Braces for a Variable March Before Spring’s Arrival

Hamburg residents are preparing for a mixed bag of weather conditions as the city transitions from winter to spring. While the calendar officially marks the beginning of spring on March 20th, with days becoming longer than nights, the immediate forecast predicts changeable weather and some rainfall.

A Week of Weather Contrasts

According to Dipl.-Meteorologist Thore Hansen from the German Weather Service (DWD), the period leading up to spring will be characterized by frequent shifts between pleasant and unsettled weather. A cold front currently lies over Germany, creating a contrast between the milder air in the east and southeast and the polar maritime air in the northwest.

Saturday in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein will see maximum temperatures of only eight degrees Celsius, with occasional rain. This will give way to mist and fog overnight, with temperatures dropping to between one and three degrees Celsius.

Sunday’s Brief Respite

Sunday will start cloudy but is expected to clear up throughout the day, with temperatures reaching up to ten degrees Celsius. But, rain will return overnight with freshening winds from the west.

April Showers Arrive Early

Monday will offer a preview of April weather, with continued rain and the possibility of thunderstorms. Despite the showers, there may be brief periods of sunshine and temperatures will remain in the single digits, ranging from five to nine degrees Celsius. Overnight, temperatures could fall to freezing.

High Pressure System Promises Milder Days

The weather is expected to change again on Tuesday, with a high-pressure system bringing increased sunshine. Temperatures in Hamburg could reach 14 degrees Celsius. Hansen anticipates this will be the start of a more stable and mild period, with friendly weather expected mid-week.

Understanding the Spring Equinox

The astronomical spring begins when the sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north, resulting in roughly equal day and night lengths worldwide. This event, known as the equinox, will occur on March 20th at 15:45 Central European Time (CET) in 2026.

It’s important to note that there are different ways to define the start of spring. The meteorological spring always begins on March 1st, lasting until May 31st, for statistical consistency. The phenological spring, is determined by the development of plants.

The Shifting Date of Spring

The date of the spring equinox isn’t fixed. Historically, it was often on March 21st, but Here’s changing. Due to the Earth’s orbital wobble, the equinox is gradually shifting earlier. It will increasingly occur on March 20th, and by 2048, it will frequently fall on March 19th. This shift is not related to climate change but to the Earth’s natural movements.

Did you know?

The term “equinox” comes from the Latin words “aequus” (equal) and “nox” (night), reflecting the equal length of day and night during this time.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When does spring officially begin in 2026? The astronomical spring begins on March 20th.
  • What is the difference between meteorological and astronomical spring? Meteorological spring begins on March 1st and is based on temperature averages, while astronomical spring is based on the sun’s position.
