PHOENIX — A man is dead following a standoff with Phoenix police that began with a reported fight at an apartment complex, authorities said.
Officers responded to the scene near 43rd Avenue and Camelback Road around 6 a.m. On Sunday. Upon arrival, they found a woman and a child behind a locked wrought-iron gate in a backyard.
Using a Halligan tool, officers were able to force open the gate and safely remove the woman, and child. The suspect was then observed inside the apartment holding a shotgun.
After the suspect refused to comply with officers’ commands to drop the weapon, a standoff ensued. During the hour-long standoff, the suspect fired multiple rounds, damaging and disabling a law enforcement drone.
Officers returned fire. The Phoenix police Special Assignments Unit then deployed a second drone to locate the suspect, who was found with a gunshot injury. Detectives entered the apartment and found the suspect in critical condition.
The Phoenix Fire Department later pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
Authorities have stated the man and woman were in a dating relationship. The Arizona Department of Public Safety will investigate the incident.
