Genesis Magma: A New Era of Korean Performance
With the debut of the all-electric GV60 Magma, Genesis is making a bold statement. It’s no longer simply an alternative to established European performance and luxury brands. The Magma editions demonstrate a transformation into a legitimate high-performance marque, successfully blending their “Athletic Elegance” design philosophy and cultural identity with a potent powertrain.
Legit Contender: Taking on BMW M and Mercedes-AMG
Genesis Magma is a performance sub-brand positioned as the South Korean marque’s answer to rivals like BMW M and Mercedes-AMG. The signature orange Magma color, according to Genesis, symbolizes Korea’s self-confidence and passion, embodying a calculated move to infuse cultural identity into a high-performance line of vehicles.
Starting with the GV60 Magma, Genesis plans to roll out high-performance variants across its entire portfolio, including a production version of the G80 Magma Special and eventually a halo supercar inspired by the Magma GT Concept. By integrating learnings from their new Magma Racing program, set to compete in the 2026 World Endurance Championship, Genesis is positioning Magma as a serious competitor.
The GV60 Magma: Power and Innovation
Most Powerful Genesis Ever
The GV60 Magma boasts a dual-motor configuration, representing a significant leap in performance for the brand. It’s now the fastest production model in Genesis’s history, delivering:
- Peak Output: 641 horsepower (478 kW / 650 PS)
- Torque: 583 lb-ft (790 Nm)
- Acceleration w/ Launch Control: 0-62 mph in 3.4 seconds; 0-124 mph in 10.9 seconds
- Top Speed: 164 mph (track-rated)
- Vehicle Weight: 4,850 lbs
Next-Gen Two-Stage Motor Control System
Conventional EVs often experience a power drop-off at high RPMs due to back electromotive force. The GV60 Magma overcomes this limitation with a next-generation two-stage motor control system. This advanced software manages the inverter’s power delivery, allowing the motors to spin up to nearly 21,000 rpm without losing torque. This ensures strong acceleration not just from a standstill, but throughout the entire speed range.
The GV60 Magma offers a competitive edge over rivals like the Mercedes-AMG EQE SUV (which has more torque but a lower top speed) and the BMW iX3 M60, thanks to its higher top speed and faster 800-volt charging architecture.
New Boost Mode: 15 Seconds of Bliss
Similar to features found in other high-performance EVs, the GV60 Magma includes an enhanced Boost Mode. While some EVs offer a 10-second burst, the Magma extends this to 15 seconds. The vehicle offers five distinct drive modes, including the Magma-exclusive Sprint and GT modes. Sprint Mode optimizes the accelerator for track use, while GT Mode provides a more refined grand touring experience.
The GV60 Magma comes standard with 275/35R21 Pirelli P Zero 5 tires.
Beyond Raw Power: A Focus on Driver Connection
As Manfred Harrer, President of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D Division, explains, the goal wasn’t solely about achieving raw speed. The ultimate aim was to create an emotional connection between the driver and the vehicle. This is reflected in the innovative accelerator pedal design, which offers increased resistance throughout its range. Lower resistance is provided for light inputs, while higher resistance is felt during more aggressive maneuvers, enhancing control and providing a more intuitive driving experience.
Additional sound-absorbing material and acoustic laminated glass further refine the driving experience.
Availability and Starting MSRP
Deliveries of the 2027 GV60 Magma are already underway in South Korea and will reach select American Genesis retailers this summer. The projected starting MSRP ranges from $75,000 to $80,000, with limited availability expected.
