Austin Peay Baseball Welcomes Lipscomb in Crucial ASUN Series
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team kicks off its home Atlantic Sun Conference schedule this weekend, hosting Lipscomb in a three-game series starting Friday, March 20th at 6 p.m. At Joe Maynard Field at Raymond C. Hand Park.
Governors Look to Build Momentum
The Governors (11-10, 2-1 ASUN) are coming off a tough mid-week loss at Ole Miss, but aim to capitalize on home-field advantage as they face the Bisons (8-10, 2-1 ASUN). Both teams enter the series with identical conference records, making this a pivotal matchup early in the ASUN campaign.
Bisons Bring Competitive Edge
Lipscomb recently took two of three games against North Alabama, demonstrating their ability to compete in conference play. Head coach Jeff Forehand, in his 26th season (20th with Lipscomb), recently achieved his 500th win with the Bisons. The Bisons were predicted to finish second in the ASUN Gold Division, just behind Austin Peay, in the preseason coaches poll.
Matias Named ASUN Player of the Week
Austin Peay boasts impressive individual performances, highlighted by graduate Andres Matias earning ASUN Player of the Week honors. Matias batted .400 with three home runs and 12 RBI during the previous week of play. Redshirt junior Ray Velazquez is currently on a six-game hitting streak, showcasing consistent offensive contributions.
Pitching Matchups Set for Weekend
Junior right-hander Cody Airington will take the mound for the Governors in the series opener, following his first win of the season at Bellarmine. He’ll be matched up against Lipscomb’s Alexander Llinas. Saturday’s game will feature DJ Merriweather for Austin Peay, making his first career start, against Landon Kiefer of Lipscomb. The starting pitcher for Sunday’s game has yet to be announced, with Lipscomb slated to start Ryan Kutz.
Series History Favors Austin Peay
Austin Peay holds a significant lead in the all-time series against Lipscomb, 80-73-1. The Governors have won the last three meetings, including a sweep of the regular season series last year. The series dates back to 1931.
