Brent Austin ran the 40-yard dash on Wednesday at Cal’s annual Pro Day, alongside teammates Hezekiah Masses and Dru Polidore Jr.
Cal’s “DBU” Pipeline Continues
The University of California has earned the moniker “DBU” due to its success in developing NFL-caliber defensive backs. Since the 2020 NFL Draft, nine Cal defensive backs have been selected and currently remain on NFL rosters.
On Thursday, Austin, Masses, and Polidore Jr. Showcased their skills for scouts representing all 32 NFL teams at California Memorial Stadium. All three players expressed satisfaction with their performances.
“I wanted to reveal the scouts in person that I could do what I put on tape,” Austin said.
Polidore Jr. Added, “I felt like my DB work was smooth. I was able to display my athleticism and my ability to move efficiently as a defensive back.”
Masses stated, “There are always some things you can clean up, but I thought it was a solid day.”
Transferring to Berkeley
All three defensive backs transferred to Cal in 2025, drawn by the program’s reputation for developing NFL talent. Austin noted that Cal’s established success had “put this place on a pedestal,” making it an attractive destination for aspiring professionals.
Masses echoed this sentiment, adding that Cal’s academic reputation was also a significant factor in his decision. “You get a great education at Cal,” he said. “I also definitely knew about DBU. Those guys took it to the next level. It was a great opportunity for me to come to Cal.”
2025 Season Highlights
In their single season with the Bears in 2025, all three players made significant contributions. Masses tied for first nationally with 18 pass breakups and tied for eighth with five interceptions, earning second-team All-American honors. Austin was a third-team All-ACC selection and made what was described as the team’s most memorable play of the season, forcing and recovering a fumble near the goal line to secure a 21-18 victory over North Carolina. Polidore recorded 62 tackles after stepping into a starting safety role due to an injury to Isaiah Crosby.
Other Cal players who participated in the 2026 Pro Day included T.J. Bollers, Jacob De Jesus, LJ Johnson, Aidan Keanaaina, Jordan Spasojevic-Moko, and Chris Victor. Former players Lu-Magia Hearns and Jaydn Ott also participated.
The 2026 NFL Draft is scheduled for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh.
