A recent study has confirmed that a large asteroid struck the North Sea approximately 43-46 million years ago, unleashing a colossal tsunami exceeding 100 meters in height. Researchers, led by Dr. Uisdean Nicholson of Heriot-Watt University, discovered rare “shocked” quartz and feldspar crystals at the crater floor. These minerals can only form under the extreme pressure generated by a high-velocity asteroid impact, solidifying the impact hypothesis.
A Tsunami Taller Than Big Ben
The asteroid, estimated to be around 160 meters in diameter, collided with the seabed at a low angle from the west. The impact created a massive explosion, ejecting a plume of rock and water reaching approximately 1.5 kilometers into the air before collapsing back into the sea. This event generated a tsunami exceeding 100 meters – taller than London’s iconic Big Ben (96 meters).
The resulting wave would have radiated outwards, impacting coastlines and causing widespread devastation. The scale of the tsunami underscores the immense power released during the asteroid collision.
Silverpit Joins the Ranks of Notable Impact Craters
The Silverpit Crater is now classified as a rare, well-preserved high-velocity impact crater. Globally, only around 200 impact craters have been identified on land, and approximately 33 lie beneath the ocean’s surface.
This discovery places Silverpit alongside other significant impact craters, such as the Chicxulub Crater in Mexico – linked to the dinosaur extinction – and the Nadir Crater off the coast of West Africa.
Gareth Collins of Imperial College London highlighted the findings as crucial evidence, stating that the asteroid impact hypothesis was the most plausible explanation from the beginning.
