UFPR seeks renal patients for laser therapy study. (Freepick)

Researchers from the Postgraduate Program in Dentistry at the Federal University of Paraná (PPGO-UFPR) are seeking volunteers to participate in a latest study. The work will investigate the effectiveness of periodontal treatment combined with laser therapy in patients with kidney disease.

Who Can Participate in the Study?

The target audience is individuals with kidney disease who present signs of gum changes, such as bleeding, inflammation, gum recession, or tooth mobility. Activities will be carried out at the Dental Clinics of UFPR, on the Jardim Botânico Campus, in Curitiba.

Chronic kidney disease is associated with inflammatory and immunological changes that favor the emergence and worsening of periodontal disease.

According to PPGO, this relationship is bidirectional, as oral problems can also worsen the patient’s overall health. Periodontal treatment is essential and laser therapy emerges as a promising alternative to reduce inflammation, control bacteria, and improve healing.

Professors from the Department of Stomatology at UFPR, Reila Tainá Mendes and Maria Ângela Naval Machado, are responsible for the research, which aims to evaluate the effectiveness of this combined approach, analyzing clinical periodontal parameters, levels of inflammation, and the evolution of the condition over the course of patient follow-up.

How to Volunteer
