Iran Signals Potential Disruption to Key Shipping Lane, Demanding Transparency from Korean Vessels

The Iranian Ambassador to South Korea, Saeed Kouzechi, stated on March 26th that South Korean vessels with ties to American companies or utilizing energy facilities with U.S. Investment may face difficulties transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

Request for Korean Vessel Information

Ambassador Kouzechi revealed that he requested information on the specifications of South Korean ships. He explained this was “to allow these vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz after coordination and review by Iranian military authorities and relevant bodies.” This suggests a willingness to review Korean vessels for passage, but does not guarantee it.

U.S. And Israeli Connections a Barrier

However, Kouzechi clarified that vessels linked to the United States or Israel would be denied passage. He extended this restriction to companies investing in Persian Gulf energy facilities or oil fields with U.S. Shareholder involvement. He stated that any company “doing business with American companies” is considered a target for sanctions, particularly during times of conflict.

Iran Blames U.S. For Potential Disruptions

Kouzechi argued that if Iran is under attack, This proves unreasonable for American companies to continue operating freely in the region. He asserted, “We should not be blamed for this situation. The responsibility lies with the United States.” He emphasized that Iran’s actions are a response to perceived aggression and economic pressure.

Korean Government Response

The South Korean government has adopted a cautious stance. A Foreign Ministry official stated that Iran has not provided specific details regarding the conditions for Korean vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The official added that the government is “closely monitoring the Middle East situation while seeking ways to protect our citizens and secure safe shipping routes for energy.” Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is evaluating whether assurances from Iran are universally applicable, stating a definitive judgment is premature.

Currently, 26 South Korean vessels are reportedly stranded in the area.

Warning Against Alliance Involvement

Ambassador Kouzechi also issued a warning regarding U.S. Requests for South Korean support in securing passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He urged South Korea to avoid becoming “involved in this disastrous situation” and “an accomplice to this failure,” calling on the country to demand that the U.S. Resolve the crisis it created.
