Saiyuki Trio to Bring Asian Jazz Fusion to Pléneuf-Val-André
The Music O’Val festival in Pléneuf-Val-André, Côtes-d’Armor, will host the Saiyuki trio on March 28, 2026, at the Guémadeuc hall. This performance promises a unique musical experience blending contemporary jazz with traditional Asian music.
A Journey Through Soundscapes
The Saiyuki trio, a collaboration organized by the municipality in partnership with PeeWee Label, features three accomplished musicians. Guitarist Nguyên Lê, of Franco-Vietnamese origin, leads the group. He is joined by Mieko Miyazaki, a Japanese artist skilled in the koto, shamisen, and vocals, and Prabhu Édouard, an Indian percussion master of the tablas and other percussion instruments.
Blending Traditions and Innovation
Vincent Mahey, artistic director of PeeWee Label, describes the trio’s music as a fusion of Asian heritage and contemporary jazz. The group’s sound is characterized by improvisation, acoustic finesse, and electric energy, creating a vibrant and intimate sonic journey.
Inspired by a Classic Tale
The concert is inspired by the 16th-century Chinese novel, “Journey to the West.” The name “Saiyuki” directly references this celebrated story, which recounts the pilgrimage of the monk Xuanzang to India in search of sacred Buddhist texts. The musical project mirrors this journey, symbolizing both real and imagined explorations that fuel artistic creation.
From Vietnam to India: A Seamless Musical Tapestry
The trio weaves together musical threads from Vietnam, Japan, and India, creating a borderless Asian soundscape. The performance will move from meditative lyricism to rock-infused pulsations, showcasing the unique interplay of traditional instruments, improvisation, and jazz elements.
