AUCKLAND — A tragedy unfolded in the suburb of Onehunga this morning after a fast-moving house fire claimed one life and left the local community reeling.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze on Trafalgar St at approximately 7:20 a.m. On Friday. The scale of the emergency prompted a significant response, with 12 fire appliances dispatched from across the region, including crews from Onehunga, Ellerslie, Mount Roskill, Balmoral, Auckland City, Otara, Remuera, Mangere, Avondale, Parnell, Otahuhu, and Papatoetoe stations.

Fire and Emergency NZ acting assistant commander Kenton Rusbridge confirmed the discovery of a fatality within the building. Officials noted that the conditions inside the property were extreme, driven by a heavy accumulation of items. “The building was heavily fuel-loaded as a result of some hoarding, resulting in the extreme fire conditions found by the fire crews,” Rusbridge stated.

Terrifying Screaming Onehunga

Resident Orini Johnson, who was among the six adults at the property when the fire broke out, described a frantic escape. “I woke up to just my [other residents] screaming and banging on my door to come and get me out of here,” she said, adding that the smell of burning paper and the sight of the house already engulfed in flames defined the harrowing experience.

Medical personnel from St John were on the scene, utilizing three ambulances, an operations manager, and two rapid response vehicles. Four individuals were assessed at the site for minor conditions.

Community Impact and Ongoing Investigation

The incident has had a significant impact on local infrastructure and community morale. Maungakiekie MP Greg Fleming described the event as a “deeply sad day for Onehunga.” He praised the efforts of the fire crews, noting they worked “everything they could in very difficult conditions.”

The immediate area remains restricted, with police cordons in place on Trafalgar St between Pleasant St and Forbes St, and on Symonds St up to Aumoana Ln. These closures are expected to remain in effect for most of the day as fire investigators examine the scene. Commuters should expect ongoing disruptions, as Auckland Transport has diverted bus routes 67A and 67B via Pah, Mt Albert, and Manukau roads to bypass the area.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation continues, authorities are likely to focus on the specific circumstances that led to the rapid spread of the fire. The formal identification of the deceased and a full report from fire investigators are expected to follow in the coming days. In the wake of the tragedy, emergency officials have issued a reminder regarding the necessity of fire safety measures. Rusbridge emphasized the importance of having “tested working smoke alarms and to have a safe escape plan” to ensure residents can evacuate safely during a fire emergency.
