Businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan submitted a formal affidavit to the Philippine National Police Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP CIDG) on Thursday regarding the deaths of two Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes. The investigation concerns the drowning of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who were swept away by large waves during a training activity in Dipaculao, Aurora, earlier this month.
Why authorities requested a statement from Pangilinan
The CIDG summoned Pangilinan to clarify the role of the MVP Sports Foundation in the Ateneo men’s basketball program. According to CIDG director Maj. Gen. Robert Morico, investigators found that the foundation was allegedly in charge of planning the team’s training activities. This central role in operational oversight prompted the police to seek direct testimony from the foundation’s namesake. Conversely, in a formal statement, the foundation asserted that its involvement with the basketball program is restricted exclusively to providing financial support.
Status of the ongoing investigation
The legal process regarding the incident is nearing its conclusion. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed in a text message to reporters that the CIDG director informed Pangilinan’s legal counsel that his physical presence is no longer required. Secretary Remulla noted that the submitted affidavit is considered sufficient for the current phase of the case build-up. While the affidavit has been processed, officials have not disclosed its specific contents.

What could happen next in the case
With the affidavit now in the possession of the CIDG, the agency is likely to finalize its case build-up. Based on the current trajectory, investigators may use the information provided to determine if formal charges are warranted or if the inquiry requires further testimony from other stakeholders. The conclusion of this phase may lead to a public report on whether the planning of the training activity involved negligence or if the responsibility remains confined to the financial scope described by the MVP Sports Foundation.
