Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges as Fossil Fuel Dependence Declines
In a landmark report released today, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) announced that renewable energy sources now account for over 30% of the world’s electricity generation, up from just 10% a decade ago. The shift marks a historic acceleration in the transition away from fossil fuels, driven by plummeting costs and government policies.
“The pace of change is unprecedented,” said Francesco La Camera. “We are seeing record-breaking installations of solar and wind farms.”
China remains the global leader in renewable energy deployment, responsible for nearly half of all new installations in 2023. The country’s massive investments in wind and solar have propelled it ahead of the European Union, which previously held the top spot.

The growth is not limited to China. The United States saw a sharp increase in renewable energy projects, with states like Texas and California leading the charge. Meanwhile, India’s renewable sector expanded rapidly, with solar power capacity now surpassing 70 gigawatts—enough to power millions of homes.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. The report highlights that global energy demand is still rising, and coal-fired power plants continue to operate in many regions. However, the trend is unmistakable: renewable energy is becoming the backbone of the world’s electricity systems.
IRENA projects that by 2030, renewables could supply up to 60% of global electricity, provided current policies are maintained and scaled up. “This is not just about energy—it’s about economic opportunity, job creation, and a healthier planet,” La Camera emphasized.
