An international research team reported Friday, July 3, 2026, that the extinct human species Homo floresiensis likely scavenged meat left by Komodo dragons rather than hunting big game. Published in Science Advances, the study suggests these “hobbits” lacked the behavioral sophistication to control fire or coordinate large-scale hunts.
How Komodo dragon tooth marks redefined the “Hobbit” diet

For years, the presence of stone tools and animal bones at Liang Bua cave on Flores Island suggested that H. floresiensis was a capable hunter. However, a new analysis of Stegodon florensis insularis—an extinct dwarf elephant relative—paints a different picture. Researchers identified 54 cut marks from stone tools, but found nearly twice as many tooth marks from Komodo dragons.
The spatial distribution of these marks is the key. According to National Geographic, the dragon marks clustered around the highest-quality meat, specifically the hips and shoulders. In contrast, the human cut marks were located on scraps, such as the ribs and feet.
“At first, I thought all I was seeing were cutmarks,” Grace Veatch, a paleoanthropologist at the University of Tübingen, said. But she found that “almost all of them turned out to be Komodo dragon tooth scores.”
To verify these findings, the team conducted an experiment at Zoo Atlanta, feeding a goat carcass to a captive Komodo dragon. By documenting the resulting pits and furrows, researchers could confidently distinguish the shallow, wide, serrated marks of a lizard from the deeper, straighter incisions left by stone tools.
The absence of fire and the “scavenging only” debate

The study challenges the assumption that H. floresiensis used fire, a trait typically associated with “higher” hominins like Homo erectus. Previous reports of charred bones at the site were re-examined. The team found no evidence of burning on over 4,000 mouse bones, suggesting that earlier observations of charring were actually natural manganese staining, Live Science reports.
This lack of fire-making and hunting technology suggests the species ate its food raw and occupied a niche similar to a hyena. This shift in understanding complicates the evolutionary timeline:
- Hunting: Requires cooperation, planning, and cumulative culture.
- Scavenging: Passive access to remains, requiring less cognitive coordination.
- Fire: A marker of advanced hominins (e.g., Neanderthals and H. sapiens).
Not all experts are fully convinced of a total lack of hunting. Kay Behrensmeyer, a paleoecologist at Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, told National Geographic that it is “very hard to distinguish hunting from scavenging based on bone modification features.” While she finds the identification of the marks convincing, she remains skeptical of a “scavenging only” hypothesis.
Why these findings disrupt the Homo erectus ancestry theory

Since their discovery in 2003, the origins of the “hobbit”—averaging 3 feet, 6 inches tall with a brain the size of a chimpanzee’s—have been hotly debated. Initially, some thought they were modern humans who experienced island dwarfism. Later, the prevailing theory was that they descended from Homo erectus.
As Haaretz notes, the erectus theory relied on the assumption that the hobbits inherited advanced traits like the use of fire and big-game hunting. If H. floresiensis did not hunt or cook, they may have evolved from a much more primitive hominin population.

The lingering mystery of the “Ape-Man”
While the scientific consensus places the extinction of H. floresiensis around 50,000 years ago, some anecdotal evidence suggests a longer survival. Anthropologist Gregory Forth, PhD, reported in Popular Mechanics that Lio people in the mountains of Flores described sightings of a short, hairy “ape-man.”
Forth believes it is possible a type of early human survived in the isolated region past the 50,000-year mark. However, paleoanthropologists largely dismiss this, citing a lack of physical evidence.
The tension between the “primitive scavenger” model and the “sophisticated tool-user” model continues to define the study of the species. Michael Petraglia, a professor of human origins at Griffith University, stated that the authors of the new study make a “very strong and convincing case for passive scavenging.”
The implications are stark: if the smallest humans to ever exist were merely cleaning up after the island’s apex predator, the “hobbit” is less a miniature version of modern humans and more a testament to the survival of an archaic, primitive lineage. As Veatch noted, in the prehistoric struggle for survival on Flores, “It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”
