Ukrainian Military Demonstrates German Skynex System’s Effectiveness in Shooting Down Russian Cruise Missile
Ukrainian forces have publicly shared a video showcasing the German Rheinmetall Skynex air defense system intercepting a Russian cruise missile, according to Ukrainska Pravda. The footage highlights the system’s role in countering aerial threats amid ongoing Russian attacks.
How Does the Skynex System Work?
The Skynex system, developed by Rheinmetall, combines radar, targeting software, and rapid-fire guns to engage drones and missiles. Andrii, a Skynex battery commander, explained that the system calculates a target’s distance, altitude, and speed before launching a projectile programmed to detonate near the threat. “The projectile is set in the moment it leaves the barrel by a programmer in the muzzle brake,” he said.
According to the Western Air Command, Skynex has downed 34 Shahed attack drones and two Kh-101 cruise missiles since its deployment. The system uses four Oerlikon Revolver Gun Mk3 units, paired with radar and battle management software, to create a layered defense.
