The tragedy in Chino was part of a broader surge of fireworks-related emergencies across the Southland. The Los Angeles Times reported several other fires and explosions that displaced residents and caused critical injuries.

Wilmington: A fire at an apartment building on the 1100 block of Pacific Coast Highway around 8:38 p.m. Friday burned multiple cars. One man was hospitalized in critical condition. The LAPD Bomb Squad identified the materials as “commercial grade fireworks.” The event displaced 10 adults and two children.

Harbor Gateway: More than 70 firefighters responded to a commercial building fire on the 14300 block of Figueroa Street shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday. No injuries were reported.

Mission Hills: A blaze ignited several cypress trees, destroying two vehicles and threatening nearby homes after 9 p.m. No injuries were reported.

La Habra: A two-alarm fire broke out in a commercial building on South Monte Vista Street on Saturday night. No injuries were reported.

The Chino investigation involves a coordinated effort between multiple specialized units. The Chino Police Department is leading the probe with assistance from the Chino Valley Fire District and the Ontario Fire Department Bomb Squad. Because a fatality occurred, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner is conducting the death investigation. To ensure public safety, authorities closed several roadways in the vicinity of the 5600 block of D Street as personnel evaluated remaining debris and potential explosive hazards.
