The organization’s decision to remove Tobey from his role comes after social media posts detailing the relationship went viral earlier this week. The news of his departure was first reported by Ryan Glasspiegel of Front Office Sports, citing anonymous sources.
Instagram Disclosures Trigger Personnel Action
The controversy originated from an Instagram account attributed to Tobey, which shared a series of posts revealing the broadcaster’s infidelity. One post featured a photo of Tobey and his partner of six years, accompanied by a caption that explicitly named Loren Waters. “This is my girlfriend of six years,” the post read, before continuing, “But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. @lorenkwaters So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not. :)”
The initial Instagram story was followed up with a photo strip that appeared to show Tobey and Loren Waters together and kissing. The allegation quickly went viral on social media, with screenshots being reposted to Reddit early Tuesday morning. Although the posts were seemingly uploaded overnight, they were removed by early morning. Tobey’s ex-girlfriend later revealed that she was the one who made those posts on his Instagram account. Since the incident, the former San Antonio broadcaster has made his social media accounts private.

Neither the Spurs nor Tobey’s representatives provided comment to Front Office Sports when reached for inquiry. Similarly, MySA reached out to Spurs Sports & Entertainment for confirmation but did not immediately receive a response.
Broadcasting Career and Personal Ties
Jacob Tobey joined the Spurs as their lead play-by-play announcer in 2024. Prior to his tenure in San Antonio, his broadcasting career included roles in Denver, where he called games for the Broncos, Nuggets, Colorado Rockies, and Avalanche. After graduating from Suffolk University in 2018, he worked as a sports anchor and reporter at KJRH in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2025, he also served as a broadcaster for the inaugural season of the Golden State Valkyries on CBS Bay Area (KPIX-TV), though he did not return to that role for the following season; Jordan Kent currently serves in that position.

The connection between the parties involved extends back to Tobey’s early career in Oklahoma. As reported by the San Antonio Report, Tobey met Lindy Waters III while working at KJRH, during the time the player was a guard for Oklahoma State. Lindy Waters III, a five-year NBA veteran, played 38 games for the Warriors in the 2024-25 season before Golden State sent him to Detroit as part of the multi-team Jimmy Butler trade. He played for the Spurs last season and is currently a free agent. Loren Waters is a filmmaker whose relationship to the player is confirmed via a Filmmaker Magazine feature linked in the bio of her Instagram account.
Broadcast Team Uncertainty and Organizational Conflict
The team is currently without a television home for local game broadcasts next season after the FanDuel Sports Networks shuttered at the conclusion of last season. Typically, teams have kept their broadcast teams consistent even when changing where their games air. Tobey would have appeared to be in line to keep the job at whatever network or platform ultimately secures rights for local Spurs broadcasts next season, had the alleged affair not become public.

Industry observers noted that while many media personalities have faced allegations of infidelity and continued to have long and successful careers, Tobey’s removal likely came down to the fact that this alleged affair occurred with the sister of an active player. It is understood that such a situation could create potential conflicts of interest for the organization.
