Johor PAS Rejects BN Offer, Sparks Political Tensions in Malaysian State
Johor PAS has condemned Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s refusal to accept the Islamist party’s offer to support Barisan Nasional (BN) in forming the state government, labeling the move as “conceited and arrogant,” according to a statement by Johor PAS commissioner Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed.
PAS’s Stance on Government Stability
Mahfodz clarified that PAS’s willingness to back BN stems from a desire to ensure political stability if the coalition fails to secure a simple majority. “We are not begging to be in the government,” he stated, emphasizing that the party’s priority is the “continuity of Malay-Muslim leadership in Johor.” This aligns with PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s call for stability over personal political gains.
According to Mahfodz, PAS has instructed supporters to vote for BN candidates in seats that are not contested by the party or PN to maintain majority control. This strategy, he argued, is designed to ensure the continuity of Malay-Muslim leadership in Johor.
Onn Hafiz Denies Cooperation, Calls Narrative Misleading
Onn Hafiz, chairman of Johor BN, rejected claims that PAS would join the state administration, calling the narrative “meant to mislead the public.” He denied agreeing to a deal where PAS would contest only 11 seats in exchange for appointed assemblyman posts.
While Abdul Hadi had previously stated PAS’s openness to supporting BN in a minority government, Onn Hafiz’s comments suggest a firm rejection of any collaboration.
