Caitlin Clark’s participation was a central focus of the matchup as she returned to the court following a brief absence. Clark had missed the second night of Indiana’s back-to-back, a 92–89 win over the Phoenix Mercury, on Thursday, July 9. She had just returned from a back injury in the Fever’s 106–92 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on July 8, where coach Stephanie White said beforehand she would sit out the following Thursday night. Against the Sparks, Clark was on a minutes restriction, playing 16 minutes and finishing with 9 points on 4-of-12 shooting, along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Following that loss, she expressed hope that her minutes limit could be raised to 25 for the Sunday matchup against the Aces. In Sunday’s contest, she played 24 minutes, contributing 12 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. This performance allowed her to set a league record, becoming the fastest player to reach 600 career assists in just 72 games.

Key Statistical Contributions and Roster Depth

While Clark managed her minutes, the Fever’s balanced scoring attack proved too much for the Aces to handle. Guard Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 27 points, burying big shot after big shot to keep Las Vegas at arm’s length. Aliyah Boston added a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double, giving A’ja Wilson plenty to deal with inside. Additionally, Sophie Cunningham provided a major spark off the bench with 20 points. Cunningham, who was walking the Octagon at UFC 329 less than 24 hours earlier, caught fire, drilling six of her seven attempts from beyond the arc. Her individual three-point output surpassed that of the entire Aces roster.

Aces Performance and Standings Impact

For the Las Vegas Aces, the defeat represents a notable shift in their recent momentum, occurring just after a 48-point demolition of the Phoenix Mercury. A’ja Wilson recorded 20 points and 12 rebounds, but she received limited offensive support from her teammates. Jackie Young contributed 15 points, but no other player on the Aces reached double figures. The Fever previously won their first matchup against Las Vegas 84-69 on July 5, a contest that both Clark and Wilson missed due to injury.

Following the result, the league standings have tightened. The Fever improved to 14-9 on the season and are currently sitting in fifth place in the WNBA standings. The loss dropped the Aces to 17-7, bumping them to second place behind the Minnesota Lynx, though there is still plenty of season left for them to try to secure the top seed. The Fever will be back in action on Wednesday when they face the Golden State Valkyries, while the Aces will get a break before taking on Toronto on July 20.
