A male youth is currently assisting police in Singapore following two fires at Block 501 Jelapang Road in Bukit Panjang on July 15. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and police were alerted to the incidents at approximately 8:10 p.m. While no injuries were reported, authorities confirmed preliminary findings suggest the fires were deliberately set.
Details of the July 15 Incidents
Emergency responders dealt with two separate fires within the same Housing Board block on the evening of July 15. According to the SCDF, the first fire occurred in a common corridor on the 10th floor and involved a personal mobility aid; crews extinguished the flames using a water jet. A second fire broke out in a common corridor on the fourth floor, involving a bicycle cover. Members of the public successfully extinguished the second fire using a dry powder fire extinguisher before SCDF personnel arrived.
Three individuals were assessed for smoke inhalation at the scene but declined hospital transport. Reports from the Chinese-language publication Lianhe Zaobao following a site visit on July 16 noted that the walls and ceiling of the 10th-floor corridor remained blackened by smoke, accompanied by a lingering burnt smell.
Investigation Into Recurring Fires
Holland-Bukit Timah GRC MP Edward Chia visited residents on July 16 to address concerns regarding the safety of the block. In a social media post, Chia stated that there have been three reported fire incidents at Block 501 in the past two months. He noted that the July 15 fires were the most recent, and that subsequent investigations into these events uncovered additional previously unreported incidents.
The police have identified a male youth for his suspected involvement in mischief by fire. MP Chia stated that grassroots leaders are increasing “Citizens On Patrol” efforts, and authorities have committed to more frequent police patrols in the vicinity until the investigation concludes.
Safety Measures and Community Response
The frequency of these incidents has prompted a call for increased vigilance among residents. MP Chia expressed appreciation for the neighbors who intervened to extinguish the fire on the fourth floor, preventing further spread. He encouraged residents to remain observant and report any suspicious activity to the police immediately.
