White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Thursday that President Trump will attend the championship match. The appearance follows weeks of speculation regarding his involvement in the tournament, which has been co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While Trump did not attend any of the previous 102 matches, his presence at the final aligns with the precedent set by other heads of state at recent World Cup tournaments.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who has maintained a close relationship with Trump, stated last month that the two would participate in the ceremony. We will be together with the president enjoying the final and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together, Infantino said in an interview with Fox & Friends. Before heading to New Jersey, the president is scheduled to be in New York City on Friday to attend a FIFA reception hosted at Trump Tower. This event serves as a formal precursor to the final match. The administration views the final as a significant milestone for the tournament, with Leavitt describing it as a fitting conclusion to a tournament that showcased America’s ability to host the world on the grandest stage.

Prior Involvement and Tournament Controversies

Although Trump has not attended matches in person, his administration has been involved in tournament logistics. His most notable intervention occurred earlier this month when he contacted Infantino to request a review of a red card suspension issued to American striker Folarin Balogun. FIFA’s subsequent decision to overturn the suspension proved polarizing, as The Guardian noted, with critics arguing the move impacted the integrity of the competition.
