The Ruling on the Hamilton-Russell Collision
The incident occurred at the exit of turn 5 during the opening lap at Spa-Francorchamps. As Hamilton and Russell fought for position, the left-front wheel of Hamilton’s Mercedes made contact with the rear-right of Russell’s car. The impact caused Russell to spin, ultimately forcing his retirement from the race.
According to the official stewards’ report, Hamilton acknowledged Russell’s presence and attempted to leave appropriate space. The commission determined that the collision stemmed from “a loss of grip at the front,” rather than an aggressive or deliberate maneuver. Despite this, the stewards ruled that Russell had established enough overlap to earn space on the track, leading to a five-second time penalty for Hamilton.
