Residents living along Louisiana’s 85-mile industrial corridor between Baton Rouge and New Orleans face significant health risks from toxic air pollution that often goes unmonitored by state regulators. An analysis by Floodlight and the Guardian reveals that many of the state’s heaviest polluters operate without nearby public air monitors, leaving communities vulnerable to hazardous chemical releases and long-term exposure to carcinogens.

According to a Floodlight/Guardian analysis, ten of Louisiana’s top 25 industrial air polluters operate without a single public air monitoring station within five miles of their facilities.

When the leak ignited the following morning, residents within two miles were not ordered to evacuate for over 15 hours. At least 29 people were later treated at area hospitals for symptoms including nausea and headaches.
This incident highlights a broader trend: as federal funding for environmental monitoring has stagnated, the number of operating air monitors nationwide has declined. In Louisiana, the LDEQ’s air monitoring budget has dropped by more than one-third when adjusted for inflation since 2020.
